Rooster 8.1 Class Association

The Rooster 8.1 2010 Nationals will be held at:

London Corinthian Sailing Club on the 20th and 21st of November 2010

This venue should provide an unusual challenge for most competitors, how often do you get to sail in the heart of London with spectators (there are lots of Pubs and footpaths along the river). There’s a 3 knot tide, an island which creates back-eddies and you’ll be sailing on one of the widest bits of the river which has a South-Westerly prevailing wind (and the trees will have shed their leaves so they’ll have less effect on the winds). The facilities are superb, the venue should suit the 8.1 and the club already has a group of Laser sailors. Rig hire will be once again again available at the bargain price of £15.

There may well be accommodation available via the club or club members and with an entry fee expected to be around £25 which will include a sit-down meal on the Saturday night

In 2007 Rooster Sailing Ltd finished testing and development of a new class of boat - the Rooster 8.1

  sail02

The new rig was designed to be compatible with the Laser® yet delivers an amazing performance that would suit anyone over 90kg. The recommended handicap number for the Rooster 8.1 is 1053 (2010). Available with two different mast options. Choose between a complete aluminium lower mast or a reinforced glass extender piece that fits into your existing Standard rig lower mast. The Rooster 8.1 sail is constructed with long life and performance in mind. In addition to 4oz Dacron cloth in the main body, the leech is constructed of Mylar, as this is where the highest loads occur. This means that permanent leech stretch is reduced to almost zero. Leech flutter in between battens is eliminated. The Bi-radial construction contributes to increased cloth stability and so making the sail easier to control its power. The large window also helps with visibility when racing. Mainsheet loads are slightly less than the Standard rig, and vang loads are slightly higher. The rig is more like a Jaguar than a Porsche, which means you get a steady power delivery upwind. Its downwind performance is amazing once you are past the beam and planing is easy in most conditions. Rudder loads are reduced too

For those of you who have spent their holidays at Minorca sailing, you will know that they have four 8.1 rigs available to their clients - your ‘webmaster’ was one of the many people who took the opportunity to try out the ‘monster’ sized rig whilst on holiday - he was hooked and that’s why he’s maintaining this web site on behalf of the class association

The Rooster 8.1 is compatible with Laser® but is not an original Laser® Product.  It’s a Rooster Sailing™ Product!
